About Luca Milone, MD, PhD, FACS
Dr. Milone earned his medical degree from the University of Genoa, one of the oldest Medical Schools in Italy, where he also completed a general surgery residency and a PhD in New Technology and Experimental Applications in Minimally Invasive Surgery. He subsequently pursued advanced research at Columbia University Medical Center and ÍøºìºÚÁÏ, contributing to pioneering work in the endoscopic management of obesity and the development of Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). DR Milone was part of the team that performed the first pure NOTES chlecystectomy in the world. During this period, he also developed multiple patents related to robotic endoscopy and advanced endoscopic devices.
Dr. Milone later completed an advanced clinical fellowship in robotic surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a second general surgery residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Board certified in both the United States and Italy, Dr. Milone has developed expertise in complex abdominal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive and robotic approaches. Since 2017, he has served as a full-time attending surgeon at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, where he has held key leadership roles including Chief of General Surgery and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency. In these roles, he has led clinical program development, expanded robotic surgery capabilities, and mentored residents and fellows who have successfully pursued competitive subspecialty training.
Dr. Milone’s research focuses on the development and clinical implementation of advanced surgical technologies, including robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems. He has contributed to foundational work in NOTES, robotic hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, and AI integration in surgical practice, and is a co-founder of the Artificial Intelligence Organization of the Next Generation Surgeons (AIONS). His scholarly work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications, international collaborations, and patents. Deeply committed to surgical education, he has been recognized for excellence in teaching and remains actively involved in curriculum development, resident training, and national surgical societies, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
